What You Can Teach in the Student Conduct Process
By encouraging your student to cooperate in the Student Conduct Process and accepting responsibility for his/her actions/choices, you become a co-educator of several positive values:
- Responsibility - Your student's conduct mayor may not be determined to be a violation of the Code of Student Life. Acceptance of whatever responsibility is theirs is the starting point for students' education and beginning of growth.
- Integrity - By encouraging your student to be honest about his/her behavior, you reinforce the value of being one person regardless of context.
- Accountability - One of the main purposes of the Student Conduct Process is to as much as possible repair any harm done, including to the University's reputation.
- Empathy - Learning to consider the impact of one's actions on others is an important developmental milestone. As a parent, you can encourage your student to be mindful of how his/her choices affect more than just him/herself.
- Agency - Students speak for themselves in the Student Conduct Process. Enable your student to take the lead on resolving his/her situation. Encourage your student to advocate for him/herself as well as taking personal responsibility.
